Practical Strategies for Using Digital Text in the Classroom
Sue Hardin, Macomb Intermediate School District Take advantage of everything digital! This hands-on session will provide you with practical strategies for using digital text in the classroom to support your struggling readers! We’ll explore a large variety of reading tools for students who need assistance with an occasional word as well as those who struggle with the whole text (including some that can be downloaded from the Internet for FREE!). You’ll learn to determine which tools are most important for your classroom and your students´ needs. Discover tips, tricks and resources for creating, using and finding electronic text on the web. You’ll leave with the knowledge and tools to better meet your students’ reading needs. |

Smart Board and Assistive Technology Integration

In this session, participants will explore ways to integrate Assistive Technology tools and software with the Smart Board so that all students can participate in the curriculum. Smart Boards have opened the doors to making assistive technology a universal tool for all. The session will cover methods for students to use alternative input devices and augmentative communication tools and software to participate in classroom activities. Participants will explore ways to create lessons using Smart Notebook software and explore web sites that have premade materials to meet the needs of all students.
Software to Support Students' Writing Across the Core Curriculum

Students with writing challenges frequently struggle with spelling, vocabulary choice, fluency, and general monitoring of their writing. Text-to-speech and word prediction software applications have been shown to have a significant impact on students’ production of text, as well as improvements in spelling, fluency, and content. This session will demonstrate text-to-speech and word prediction software programs designed to support students’ writing across the core curriculum.
Speech Recognition - Dragon & Beyond

Features of different programs will be demonstrated and compared. Training and implementation strategies will be discussed as well as potential challenges. |
